What is a Pap smear?

A Pap smear is a simple screening procedure used to detect precancerous or cancerous changes in the cervix—often caused by HPV (human papillomavirus). It’s one of the most effective tools we have to prevent cervical cancer in women.

Step by Step Guide

Your provider will gently insert a speculum (we use a soft plastic or Nella speculum at our clinic) to view the cervix.
A small brush is used to collect cells from the cervix
The brush is swirled in a solution and sent to the lab.
The lab examines the cells under a microscope to check for any abnormal or precancerous changes.

Why Pap Smears Matter

Paps detect early signs of cervical cancer when it’s most treatable
Identify HPV infections and abnormal cervical cells before they become serious
Recommended every 3 years (ages 21–65), or every 5 years if done with an HPV test
Not needed until you turn 21 years old
