Pelvic Exams & Pap Smears

A Pap smear is a medical procedure to screen for cervical cancer in women

Your Pap Smear Guide:

A health provider uses a speculum (plastic or Nella speculum in this clinic) to gently open the vagina to see the cervix
Then a small brush is inserted to reach the cervical os to collect cells then the brush is swirled around in a cup with solution to be sent to the lab
The lab will check under a microscope for abnormal or precancerous changes to cells, often caused by human papillomavirus (HPV).

Why Paps are Important:

It's a key tool for detecting early signs of cervical cancer.
It can identify HPV infections and abnormal cells before they become cancerous.
It’s recommended every 3 years for most women ages 21 to 65, or every 5 years if combined with an HPV test. You do not need a Pap smear until you are 21 years old

Every year in the U.S., approximately 4,300 to 4,320 women die from invasive cervical cancer

The Nella speculum is an alternative to traditional metal or plastic speculums used during Pap smears and pelvic exams. Nella is designed specifically for comfort and reducing anxiety during pelvic exams.

The Nella speculum is the purple speculum in picture to right-notice the slimmer design compared to the metal or plastic speculum.

Slimmer profile compared to metal or plastic speculums
Reduces pinching, poking, and pressure compared to traditional speculums.
No "clicking" " noises with Nella unlike plastic speculum
Nella is for ALL women but especially those with vaginal dryness, vaginal atrophy, sensitivity, not sexually active, history of trauma, and anxiety in women completing their 1st Pap smear or 25th Pap!
Some women have ZERO issues with metal or plastic speculums, but we want to offer modern options that encompass ALL women's needs
